Impressions of Monet at Gardens by the Bay

For the first time, Gardens by the Bay features a unique blend of horticulture and digital art at the Flower Dome. This exhibit spans an impressive 2,650 square meters, making it more than three times larger than the typical floral displays seen before.

Titled Impressions of Monet, this tribute to the renowned French Impressionist artist Claude Monet features two distinct yet harmonising components. The first is “Impressions of Monet: The Garden,” a floral display and the second is “Impressions of Monet: The Experience,” a multi-sensory immersive exhibition situated in the space adjacent to the Flower Dome. This innovative presentation marks a new milestone for Gardens by the Bay, merging traditional horticulture with cutting-edge digital experiences.

The Garden

Claude Monet was born in Paris in 1840 and from a young age, he demonstrated remarkable artistic talent. In 1872, he created a painting of a harbor using very loose brushstrokes, which he titled “Impression, Sunrise.” He displayed this painting alongside works by his friends, who also painted outdoors, or ‘en plein air.’ The name of Monet’s painting led to these artists being collectively known as the Impressionists.

Horticulturists have meticulously recreated various elements of the gardens surrounding Claude Monet’s home. This includes the Clos Normand garden, as well as the Water Garden, which Monet acquired later on and developed at the lower end of the Clos Normand property. Additionally, they have recreated Monet’s famous pink house, featuring significant rooms such as the dining room, kitchen, reading room, and the artist’s salon. This detailed reconstruction provides a vivid representation of Monet’s living and creative spaces.

The floral display showcases a carefully selected collection of more than 18,000 plants spanning 40 species, closely resembling those found in Monet’s gardens at the height of summer. This includes cleomes, delphiniums, digitalis, geraniums, hollyhocks, and sunflowers. At the heart of the Flower Dome stands a replica of Monet’s iconic pink house.

The Experience

“Impressions of Monet: The Experience” is a multi-sensory celebration of Claude Monet’s life and works, as well as those of his contemporaries. This exhibition utilises light, colour, sound, and fragrance to create enchanting spaces.

When you enter the “Night at the Lily Pond”, you will be surrounded by a nighttime landscape, with images of wisterias and water lilies projected on the walls. Glimmers of light create sparkling reflections on the pond’s water, evoking a scene that captivated Monet in his own gardens and prominently featured in many of his waterscape paintings.

The experience culminates in the Immersive Gallery, where you are treated to a breathtaking display of Impressionist artwork set to classical music. The space is filled with nature-inspired scents that evoke the lush gardens and expansive landscapes that inspired these timeless masterpieces.
