Spread your wings and let your imagination fly with the latest thematic floral display at Gardens by the Bay entitled Flight of Fancy. From now till 21st July, be awed with the myriad of colours where miniature hot-air balloons hover over the meadow in Flower Dome. Since the school’s out! They are offering 50% discount for child resident tickets. I think it’s a good idea to bring the kids for a treat at the Gardens by the Bay during the June holidays.
Miniature hot-air balloon with the backdrop of Singapore Flyer. The first thing that pops into my mind when I notice the hot-air balloon is Pixar’s movie UP, a vibrantly bubbly exploration of how life’s great adventures.

How does this simple yet spectacular contraption works? As the name implies, the hot-air balloon has everything to do with hot air. It operates on the underlying principle of hot air rises. Therefore, the air in the balloon is heated by a propane burner causing the balloon to rise. The direction is decided by the winds while the pilot can only control the altitude of the balloon. It can fly high up as much as 3,000 feet altitude above ground level.

3 essential parts for the hot-air balloon to operate:
- The burner: propels hot air to soar skywards.
- The envelope: the big fabric balloon part that is used to trap the air.
- The basket: lowermost part of the hot air balloon that holds the pilot, passengers and the propane cylinders.
For the first time, the floral theme has been extended to Cloud Forest conservatory as well. You can catch a glimpse of the hot-air balloon flight here too.

While strolling at the bottom of the Cloud Forest, look up on the elevated walkway and you will find Wau bulan, a malay moon-kite in batik print.
