Yayoi Kusama in Jakarta

Kusama-MACAN

Yayoi Kusama’s work is now in Indonesia featuring more than 130 works that span almost 70 years. The first large-scale exhibition is making its last stop in Jakarta till 9 September 2018 at Modern and Contemporary Art in Nusantara (MACAN). Kusama is one of the world’s most influential artists, and has played a crucial role in key art movements that inspired millions around the world. I have been to “Yayoi Kusama: Life Is the Heart of a Rainbow” showcased at National Gallery Singapore but Jakarta edition is still worth a visit!

Book your tickets in advance

MACAN is Indonesia’s first modern art museum opened on November 2017 located at AKR Tower in west Jakarta. The best option to get there is by ride-hailing app Grab. I would advised to buy the exhibition tickets online in advance to avoid the crowd.

Visiting timings

Visitors can choose any of the 5 slots, limited to 2 hours per visit. The best timing to enjoy the artwork is in the morning slot.

  • 10 am – 12pm
  • 12 pm – 2 pm
  • 2 pm – 4 pm
  • 4 pm – 6 pm
  • 6 pm – 8 pm

Store your bags and camera

Please arrive about 15 minutes before your session. You would need to store your bags and camera (including GoPro, DSLR, SLR, Polaroid) in the cloakroom. Only phone photography is allowed in the exhibition. Do note that you are not allowed to bring in food and drinks (including bottled water).

Without doubt Yayoi Kusama’s art makes a good pictures but her struggle with mental illness inspires many.
